Lot provides its visitors with exceptional tourist attractions. Besides the medieval treasures of Cahors, which is the capital of this department of the Languedoc-Roussillon, Midi-Pyrénées region, Lot is also home to an atypical and charming village, that of Saint-Cirq-Lapopie. Set in the Causses Nature Park, 30 km from Cahors, and like the latter, Saint-Cirq-Lapopie is a beautiful medieval village, although smaller. Indeed, it has an area of 18 km², with a population of 217 inhabitants recorded in 2013. The village of Saint-Cirq-Lapopie has a rich heritage for which it has been classified “Village préféré des Français” (France’s favorite village) in 2012.

A great number of visitors might think that the village lives only on sunny days during the months of spring and summer when everything is blooming in the park. However, they should know that this small village perched on a cliff overlooking the Lot River may be discovered throughout the year and offers breathtaking and different landscapes for each season. Saint-Cirq-Lapopie is still active, even during the winter period when restaurants, shops and accommodations are open, especially during the holidays. Also, the opportunity to admire this little paradise during the fall should not be missed, during which it turns into a fairy tale place bathed in the soft autumnal light.

A wealth of medieval houses

This place will delight lovers of art, history, culture and especially of medieval architecture. Indeed, the village consists entirely of buildings from the Middle Ages and almost all the houses there present unique and classified elements. Corbelled houses with facades and sloping roofs covered with brown tiles are accessible by small streets that add even more charm to the village. These houses were built in different centuries, including the Daura House dating from the 13th century, the Liauzu-Vinel House dating from the 15th century, or the Bordes House which dates from the 14th century.

Must-see sights and monuments in the village

The village of Saint-Cirq-Lapopie is also home to historical sites and monuments which are definitely worth a look around, starting with the fortified church of Saint-Cirq. Located on a high point compared to the other existing buildings, this 15th century church overlooks the village thanks to its monumental size. It is endowed with a Romanesque apse, a square tower and a turret staircase. A passage by the Ganil towpath is a must at it is one of the most spectacular courses in the valley. But before getting there, visitors will also discover the lock and the mill of Aulanac. To end the tour with a flourish, art lovers can enjoy contemporary art exhibitions at the Rignault Museum.
